James Construction installed a 30,000 CFM custom built Roof Top Air Handling Unit as part of an upgrade of the HVAC system for the 5th Floor East and 6th Floor East wings of the hospital. New structural steel supports were installed at the fourth floor roof level to support the unit. Updates included complete renovation of exam rooms, nursing stations and elevator lobby areas.
The hospital remained in operation throughout the project requiring close scheduling coordination between the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, the architect and James Construction during all stages of construction.Crane operations were performed on weekends to minimize disruptions. Control of noise, dust and infectious contamination were critical.
James Construction completed the project on time and within budget. Change orders were less than 2% of the original contract.
