James Construction renovated the 6th Floor East Wing to create a “hotel” environment for patients and their families to stay while getting treatment.

The HVAC system is tied into the Air Handling Unit installed as part of the 5 East renovation project, requiring both projects to be completed simultaneously. Tight coordination between the projects was required during all stages of construction during the constricted six month time schedule.

The hospital remained in operation 24/7, requiring precise coordination with hospital staff for scheduling, and strict control of noise, dust and infectious contamination.

James Construction, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and the architect developed a positive, team-oriented relationship to complete the project on time and within budget, with less than 3% change orders
